Today we travelled by boat between St Goarshausen and Rudesheim on the middle Rhine. It is a stunningly beautiful river valley, dotted with with exquisite villages, castles and steep vineyards.
We travelled about 30 km of the 65 km that UNESCO declared a world heritage site in 2002.
At every stretch and turn, a beautiful view. We alternated between freezing in the open top deck and thawing below. We drank Riesling on the Rhine .....and some gluwein to warm.
This is a high energy river...wide, fast and deep. We were pushing upstream and it was a struggle. Empty barges, most from holland, charged downstream past us like Australia 2! In its flow, it reminds of the Mekong around Pakbeng.
Because this is Germany, every kilometre has a huge marker number onshore. And we had a 2 euro book that gives a km by km description of the sites and their significance. The kids became avid castle spotters, ticking them off like twitchers.
