Arrivederci Roma

Visiting Rome for five days is like having a baby. Bear with me!

It's pretty painful - you endure sore feet, dangerous traffic, noise, smell, endless crowds and queues, sirens, complaining kids, starling shit, dog likewise, disdainful locals, high prices and a dangerously low-fibre tourist diet.

In return? The most beautiful buildings, street and city-scapes, extraordinary art, exquisite food, a rich and exciting history, an energy, richness and attitude to life that is unique. Moments of beauty and insight seem concentrated here. A place and a people that pull you in.

So, as we leave tomorrow, we are already forgetting the hard bits. Remembering the many, many wonderful sights, sounds, people and experiences. And planning another one - visit, that is.
