Last day in the market and the herring are nervous

This Saturday morning we have wandered the market, seeking out the special foods that we associate with this place. The trip had a shocking end.

Kibbeling was first - a groot portie met mayonnaise. It was Rich's breakfast! Then followed a grote stroopwafel, fritte and cappuccino. Everything was grote....and lekker.

Raw herring is for sale in the Dordrecht market. A girl stands over a basin of hot water, scaling, heading and gutting these poor creatures. The basin is a slimy, shiny, slop of guts and fish heads. She lays each grey corpse alongside the next. I have previously observed that this dish is slippery proof that the starving will eat anything.

Having watched this process, appalled, I joked to Syl that she could prove her heritage by eating one. It was a joke, but she took the bait....literally! She even declined the chopped onion that others use to disguise the taste!

Caity captured the mood best, recoiling in horror "I will never think of you in the same way again!"
